ACCC’s Deveaux is Region VI champ

J’Vente Deveaux is leading Allen County Community College’s athletes qualified for this weekend’s NJCAA National Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Deveaux, a sophomore from Nassau, Bahamas, captured the Region VI and Jayhawk Eastern Division championships in the men’s triple jump. He had already qualified for the national meet with a school-record leap of 53 feet, 1 1/2 inches on Feb. 12.
A week later, Deveaux won the Region VI competition with a leap of 50’6”. The 2011 Region VI/Jayhawk Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships were Feb. 19-20 in Manhattan.
Deveaux and 10 other ACCC athletes are competing in the 2011 NJCAA National Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday in Lubbock, Texas.
Freshman Chris Henry and sophomore Kyran Stewart have qualified in the 60-meter dash. Stewart, sophomore Trent Huling and freshman DeMario Johnson are going to the nationals in the 200-meter dash.
Qualifying for the national meet in the 400-meter dash are Huling and Johnson along with sophomores Bryant Terry and Abraham Walker and freshmen Brandon Miller and Darrlyn Bennett. Miller and Terry are qualified in the 600-meter dash.
Terry, Johnson, Huling and sophomore John Thurston have qualified as the Red Devil men’s 4×400-meter relay team
For the ACCC women, freshman Nakita Casey is qualified in the 60-meter dash and sophomore Rackell Goldson will compete in the long jump at nationals.
At the Region VI/Jayhawk Conference meet, Deveaux also finished seventh in the region and third in the Jayhawk East in the long jump at 21’9 1/2”.
The ACCC men’s 4×400-meter relay team of Stewart, Huling, Johnson and Miller ran third in Region VI and second in Jayhawk East in 3 minutes, 21.07 seconds.
Johnson was second in Region VI and first in Jayhawk East in the 400-meter dash in 49.35 seconds. Thurston placed 15th in the region and seventh in the Jayhawk East in 51.17 seconds while Walker ran the race in 52.02 seconds for 21st in Region VI and 11th in Jayhawk East.
Miller placed fourth in Region VI and third in Jayhawk East in the 600-meter run in 1:23.64. Right with him was freshman Jesse Jenkins, 1:23.64, for sixth in the region and fourth among Jayhawk East runners.
Stewart ran second in Jayhawk East and sixth in Region VI in the 200-meter dash in 22.12 seconds. Huling at 22.35 seconds was fifth in the East and 10th in the region while Henry finished ninth in the East and 16th overall in 22.74 seconds.
In the 60-meter dash, Stewart was fourth in Jayhawk East and seventh in Region VI in 6.86 seconds. Henry took eighth in the East and 15th overall in 7.04 seconds and sophomore Terrance Brooks Jr. was 26th in the region in 7.25 seconds.
Patrick Johnson, a freshman, placed 10th in Region VI and sixth in the Jayhawk East in the heptathlon. Johnson scored 2,933 points in the seven-event competition. He also ran the 1,000-meter run in 3:04.68 for ninth among Jayhawk East runners and 21st overall.
In the 3,000-meter race, freshman Solomon Aberra was eighth in the East and 18th overall in 10:17.05. Freshman Travis Kyte took ninth in the conference and 20th overall in 10:39.36. Kyte placed seventh in the East and 18th overall in the 5,000-meter run in 18:24.21.
Sophomore Onel Virgil finished ninth in Region VI and fifth in Jayhawk East in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.63 seconds.
The 4×800-meter relay team of Miller, Terry, Jenkins and freshman Jamal Romeo placed 10th in Region VI and fifth in Jayhawk East in 8:57.67. Romeo, Aberra, P. Johnson and freshman John Thompson took fourth in the East and eighth overall in the distance medley relay in 12:54.45.
Sophomore Zachary Baldwin cleared the high jump bar at 6’2 3/4” to place 10th in Region VI and sixth in Jayhawk East. In the shot put, freshman Travis Venniro was 12th overall and eighth in the East with a throw of 43’8” and sophomore DeAndre Speed was 21st overall and 13th in the East at 31’5 1/4”.
Allen County’s men were fourth as a team in Jayhawk East standings with 89 points. They ended up ninth in Region VI standings with 40 points.

The Red Devil women were seventh in the East with 9 1/2 points and 11th in Region VI with three points.
Freshman Audree’Ahna Harris finished sixth in Region VI and fourth among Jayhawk East runners in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.53 seconds.
Nakita Casey finished in a tie for sixth in the East and ninth in Region VI in the 60-meter dash in a personal-best time  of 8.06 seconds. Fellow freshman Kasie House was 21st overall in 8.74 seconds.
In the 200-meter dash, Casey finished 16th in Region VI and eighth in the East in 27.24 seconds. House was 11th in the East and 22nd overall in 29.13 seconds.
Sophomore Akilah Threadgill placed 10th in Jayhawk East and 16th in Region VI in the long jump. Her distance was 14’9 1/4”.
Sophomore Bridget Sears finished eighth in Jayhawk East and 10th overall in the shot put. She had a personal-best throw of 34’5 1/2” for indoor competition.
Following this weekend’s national competition, the Red Devil track athletes turn their attention to the outdoor schedule. They could have a competition as early as March 25.
First on the schedule for now is the Emporia State Invitational, April 2  in Emporia. The Red Devils are slotted to compete in Texas, Mississippi as well as the KU Relays in Lawrence and the Southwest Relays at Winfield in April.
